❓ FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about CTC, salary, and how to use these calculators.

What is CTC and how is it different from in-hand salary? +
CTC (Cost to Company) is the total amount a company spends on an employee in a year. In-hand salary is the actual amount credited to your bank account each month. The difference includes your employee PF contribution (12% of basic), employer PF, gratuity provision (~4.81% of basic), professional tax, and income tax. Typically, your in-hand salary is 65-75% of your annual CTC.
How do I calculate my in-hand salary from CTC? +
The basic formula is: In-Hand = CTC − Employer PF − Gratuity Provision − Income Tax − Professional Tax − Employee PF. The easiest way is to use our CTC to In-Hand Calculator above. Just enter your CTC, bonus percentage, and monthly deductions, and the tool calculates your exact take-home instantly.
What is the difference between Gross Salary and CTC? +
CTC includes everything the company spends on you — including employer PF, gratuity, and any non-cash benefits. Gross Salary is what appears on your payslip before deductions. Net Salary (in-hand) is what you receive after employee PF, professional tax, and income tax are deducted from your Gross Salary.
Which tax regime is better — New or Old for FY 2024-25? +
It depends on your total deductions. If your deductions (80C investments, HRA, home loan interest, NPS, etc.) add up to more than ₹3.75 lakh, the old regime usually saves more tax. If your deductions are lower, the new regime with its ₹75,000 standard deduction tends to be more beneficial. Use our Tax Regime Comparator to see the difference with your actual numbers.
How is HRA exemption calculated? +
HRA exemption is the lowest of three values: (1) Actual HRA received from employer, (2) 50% of basic salary for metro city or 40% for non-metro, and (3) Actual rent paid minus 10% of basic salary. Only the minimum of these three amounts is tax-exempt.
What is the PF contribution percentage in India? +
Both employee and employer contribute 12% of Basic + DA to PF. Your 12% goes entirely to your EPF account. The employer's 12% is split — 3.67% goes to your EPF account and 8.33% goes to EPS (Employees' Pension Scheme). Only the EPF portion earns interest and is available for withdrawal.
Can I use these calculators on my phone? +
Yes, all calculators on CTC BreakDown are fully mobile-friendly. They work on any device — phone, tablet, or desktop — without needing any app download. Everything runs in your browser with no sign-up required.
